After a short hiatus, Olsen returns to the Hyde Park Picture House with a more regular series of Sunday afternoon screenings. For our next run, we've invited different artists and curators to guest programme part or all of each event, thereby continually offering fresh outlooks on the field of artists' film and video.

For this event, ANDREW LAMPERT (New York artist and film archivist at Anthology Film Archives) has selected some rarely screened videos from the 80s and 90s by the legendary GEORGE KUCHAR, who passed away in early September. The videos will be interspersed with live music performances by MICHAEL FLOWER (of Flower/Corsano Duo).

George Kuchar was a leading star of the American underground cinema ever since he first picked up an 8mm camera as a teenager in the 1950s. Working with his twin brother, Mike, and later on his own, George produced hundreds of films and videos that are as inventive as they are insane. One of the forefathers of camp, and an early inspiration for John Waters among many others, Kuchar is perhaps best known for his 1966 film, 'Hold Me While I'm Naked.'

The Illuminated Room is a series of free screenings that survey the field of artists’ film and video. Contemporary moving image work is screened alongside films and videos from the histories of experimental/avant-garde film, video art and underground cinema.

The two films in this screening employ different strategies to navigate and comment upon the urban and suburban landscape of North America.

In Thom Anderson's GET OUT OF THE CAR, Los Angeles is portrayed through static shots of neglected advertising signs, building facades, murals and the undeclared sites of vanished cultural landmarks. The images are activated by a soundtrack of street conversations and indigenous music – ranging from '50s jazz to '90s corrodes.

In Redmond Entwistle's MONUMENTS, conceptual artists Robert Smithson and Gordon Matta-Clark are revived from the dead and ejected from their makeshift mausoleums in New York by the forces of redevelopment. Led through New Jersey by a young Dan Graham, they debate their artistic positions with the non-actors they encounter at the former sites of their work.

ARGUMENT is a dense and provocative long-form essay examining a single issue of the New York Times magazine. Three male voices rigorously dissect the publication and simultaneously reflecting on the role of the filmmaker and the possibility of radical film practice. Reading image as text and text as image, ARGUMENT is relentless in its analysis, and stylistically beautiful.

WRITER IN RESIDENCE continues Sutcliffe’s interest in collage as a means by which to shake certainty and to surreptitiously undermine. Taking the form of a a TV-style interview, Sutcliffe deftly combines and complicates references from the writing of Thomas Mann and Colin Wilson.

Robert Fenz's 16mm films are at once lyrical, ethnographic and acutely personal. His starting point is often a person or place, and from there he works intuitively to ‘reflect a deeper understanding of the human condition.’ To make CORRESPONDENCE he travelled to the locations of three influential films made by the pioneering ethnographic filmmaker Robert Gardner: West Papua, Ethiopia and Benares (India). "CORRESPONDENCE is not a straightforward commentary on Gardners’s films; it is an elegy for a kind of image-making that is in the process of disappearing." (Fenz)

Bruce Baillie was a key figure in the independent filmmaking scene of the '60s and '70s, and his film MASS FOR THE DAKOTA SIOUX, is one of the canonical works to emerge from that period. The film is both a requiem conceived on the occasion of the murder of President Kennedy, and a tribute to the Lakota Sioux, the native people of Dakota, USA. "The film a celebration of what has passed away from our hysterical milieu of materialism and technological redneckery!" (Baille)

Sarah Pucill film screening @ Project Space Leeds, Thursday 30th June

Tomorrow, Sarah Pucill is the artist featured in the regular Soup and Cinema screening at Project Space Leeds.  We've linked up with PSL before to run one of our workshops - an introduction to 16mm including shooting and hand-processing.
